All About Internet

The internet, or the World Wide Web as it is popularly known as, is a group of millions of servers (just a computer but having lots of storage space, memory, and processing power) connected to each other via a specific range of spectrum. Each of these servers hosts one or multiple websites. However, one needs a computer along with an internet connection to access the online servers. Your local internet service provider makes this connection available to you by purchasing bandwidth from companies that provide internet facilities to the country. Signals from one country to the other are made available to the main company that supplies bandwidth to your internet service provider (ISP) through either satellite or through undersea fibre optic cables that have the capability to transfer huge chunks of data at blazing fast speed, typically several terabytes per second. However, you should not expect this speed. Typically, ISPs offer connections to individuals or businesses to the internet at speeds ranging from five megabits (MBps) per second to 100 megabytes per second (MBps) and more. While 5 MBps is fine for residential users, commercial users need a minimum of 100 MBps as they need to download huge files and the same internet connection is shared by many users. One can only get such speeds with a business broadband connection.

How do people have internet at their house or office?

People have to request their local internet service provider to provide an internet connection to their home. On receiving the call, the ISP sends their representative to the caller along with details of different browsing plans and its price per month. Typically, they offer a special discount if the person pays for a one year's subscription. After receiving the payment, the provider will set up a router modem at the subscribers home or office and connect it to their hub via copper cable (for slow connections) or through fibre optic cable for high-speed connections. Once the provider gives the connection and configures the router, you can use it for browsing the net via your computer (through a patch cable connecting your computer to the router) or use the WiFi signal emitted by the router for surfing the net via smartphones or any other WiFi compatible device.

What types of internet is there?

There are several types of internet connections including dial-up, normal broadband, business broadband, satellite, and cable. Each of them has their advantages and disadvantages.

How does website-hosting work?
